Awards & Scholarships

1. Life Membership may be proposed by a Local or by an elected National Executive Officer with concurrence of the Local. A copy of the motion proposing a candidate for life membership shall accompany each submission.
2. Any member awarded life membership in the Union of National Defence Employees shall not be eligible to become an accredited delegate to the UNDE Triennial National Conventions, unless still employed by the Department of National Defence.
3. A member receiving life membership in UNDE shall also be recommended for life membership in the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
4. Nominations for life membership may be made by any Local or member of the National Executive in respect of any member who: (i) has been a member of the Union or its predecessor organization (NDEA-CSAC) for a minimum of 20 years; (ii) has served a minimum of 15 years as an elected Union officer; (iii) has never been disciplined under Bylaw 13 or acted in a manner detrimental to unionism; (iv) has performed exemplary services for the membership.
5. Notwithstanding the guidelines above, a member may be nominated for a life membership if a single outstanding service to the Union has been performed far above the average contribution.
6. All nominations shall be submitted on the prescribed form to the National Executive Standing Committee on Honours and Awards, in care of the National President.
7. Applications submitted by a Local shall be reviewed and commented on by the appropriate Vice-President before forwarding to the Honours and Awards Committee.
8. All applications shall be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Honours and Awards who will make appropriate recommendations to the National Executive.

1. The Union may, by decision of the National Executive, or by decision of a Triennial National Convention, or by Local proposal concurred in by the National Executive, elect to honorary membership anyone who is deemed to merit such honour and is not eligible for regular membership.
2. Honorary memberships may be granted to retired members who have served a minimum of 10 years as an elected officer.
3. All nominations shall be submitted on the prescribed form to the National Executive Standing Committee on Honours and Awards, in care of the National President.

The National Executive (NE) of the Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE) has established criteria to govern the granting of 10, 15, 20, and 25 year service pins.

Underlying the criteria is the desire to establish an acceptable method to recognize service at any level for those who have, over a period of 10, 15, 20, 25 years, served the UNDE membership.

The criteria established are as follows:

1. The pin will be awarded to a person who is an active member in good standing and who has not been disciplined for a contravention of UNDE bylaws or PSAC Constitution.
2. A member in good standing for the purpose of receiving a pin will include members who have supported the union throughout their careers as either executive officers, stewards, members on committees, or workplace advocates.
3. Continuous service may include varying activities generally without breaks in service of more than three months. However, the three months may be extended for just cause in circumstances where it was unrealistic to expect a nominee to be active.
4. Applications for the pins may be sponsored by any segment of UNDE but must be submitted through their respective VP to the National Office.
5. Nomination forms (found on the website) shall be submitted to the National Office with their PSAC ID number, in care of the National President.
6. Pins will be distributed by National Office.

The National Executive of the Union of National Defence Employees have established criteria to govern the granting of 30 year service pins accompanied with a certificate from UNDE.

Underlying the criteria is the desire to establish an acceptable method to recognize long service at any level for those who have continuously, over a period of 30 years or more, served the UNDE membership.

The criteria established are as follows:

1. The pin and certificate will only be awarded to a person who was an active member in good standing and who has not been disciplined for a contravention of UNDE bylaws or PSAC Constitution.
2. An active member in good standing for the purpose of award determination will include members who have supported the union faithfully throughout their careers as either executive officers, stewards, members on committees, or workplace advocates.
3. Continuous service may include varying activities generally without breaks in service of more than three months. However, the three months may be extended for just cause in circumstances where it was unrealistic to expect a nominee to be active.
4. Nominations shall be submitted on an approved application (to be found on the website).
5. Applications for the 30 Year service award may be sponsored by any segment of UNDE but must be submitted through the Vice President of the respective region. The VP shall ensure the sponsor’s enclosure of the completed service history, any supporting documentation, a comment, and have signed the nomination form.
6. The Honours and Awards Committee will review all applications, advise the National Executive prior to each NE meeting of recommended recipients, and following ratification forward to Presidents of the respective Locals the names of recipients and awards for presentation.

Applications to be considered and presented at the National Executive meeting must be submitted by the VP of the region thirty days prior to the NE meeting. VPs of the regions will require time for review and processing; therefore, applications should be in their hands ninety days prior to the National Executive meeting.

• The pin will only be awarded to a person who was an active union official in the 18-month period immediately preceding the June 30th deadline.
• A union officer, for the purpose of award determination, will include stewards within the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
• Continuous service may include varying official positions generally without breaks in service of more than three months. However, the three months may be extended for just cause in circumstances where it was unrealistic to expect a nominee to hold a union position.
